5 Surprising Things a Blood Test Can Reveal About You

blood test

It’s normal to want to avoid blood tests.

Blood tests inform roughly 70% of medical decisions. If you’ve been avoiding getting your blood taken at the doctor, you’re taking your life into your own hands. It’s a valuable resource for medical professionals to give you proper care.

They reveal a lot more, too. For example, an employer might test to measure the recent drug and alcohol intake of a suspicious employee.

Your blood says a lot about you, not all of which is completely predictable. In this post, we’re going to tell you 5 surprising things a blood test can reveal. Let’s get started.

5 Surprising Things a Blood Test Can Reveal

Typically, a blood test can uncover anything from iron deficiency to immune system issues, hepatitis, drug and alcohol abuse, cancer, and heart conditions. That’s not what we’ll be discussing here, though. Your blood is saying so much more about you, including a lot which you might not know.

1. Depression and Anxiety

There are two major nutrients in your blood that a deficiency of which can result in a chemical imbalance associated with mood disorders. If you’re low in B12 and folate, then you’re more likely to experience anxiety and depression.

These nutrients are involved in producing energy and neurotransmitters, as well as, detoxification. Having low levels of them can signal mood disorders, but even those with normal levels can experience mood disorders for other reasons.

2. Your Alzheimers Risk

Alzheimer’s is a particularly scary illness because of what it does to your brain and your quality of life, but also because it’s silent until it’s not. That’s why this study from 2015 by UK researchers is so promising.

In it, they found that a small group of proteins in a person’s blood may be an indicator of whether they’ll develop Alzheimer’s up to 10 years before symptoms start occurring. This will be great news for Alzheimer’s treatment in the future.

3. Dehydration Levels

Chances are, you’re probably aware of the fact that you don’t drink enough water. Other parts of your body will let you know when you’re dehydrated, but blood tests can reveal when you’re in the danger zone of dehydration.

Dehydration causes fatigue, confusion, and it put stress on your heart. People of all ages, but especially the elderly suffer dire consequences when they don’t drink enough water, so a blood test could convince even the most stubborn person that water consumption is an important part of daily life.

4. Your Biological Age

You’ve got your chronological age, which is how long you’ve been alive, and your biological age. Your biological age is how old your body is compared to people in your age group.

The proteins in your blood can actually reveal your “true” age. You might not be 32 if you smoke, drink, and don’t exercise, you could be more like 36-38. If you exercise regularly and eat healthily, you may have the body of a 28-year-old.

5. Your Risk of Alcoholism

You might think that alcoholism is a result of drinking a lot and frequently, but you can be prone to it. There’s a chemical found in the blood called “PEth”, high levels of which may indicate a certain proneness to alcoholism.

Studies have found that binge drinking raises your PEth levels and the chemical has been linked to older people that suffer from alcoholism.
