How Long Does Oxycodone Stay in Your System?
The number of employees using drugs at work might surprise a lot of people. And at least 17 percent of drug use in the workplace includes opiates and a variety of depressants. For some, it’s not a big deal. But if you’re running a company, you likely should.
Drug testing is the most reliable way to keep employees from using drugs on the job. But how long does oxycodone stay in your system? It’s an important question to ask before starting the testing process.
Why Do Drug Tests?
While not all cases are the same, there are a few reasons why drug testing is a good idea.
There are many risks to employees who use drugs at work. Especially in high-activity zones. Opiates and other drugs can cause drowsiness and confusion, making accidents more likely.
Drugs can also make employees less likely to work hard. And can also change their moods and make them difficult to work with.
How Long Does Oxycodone Stay in Your System?
A drug’s half-life is the term given to the amount of time a drug is halfway out of the system. Every person’s body will metabolize in a different way, meaning half-life will vary.
But, the average half-life of oxycodone is anywhere between three and five hours. After this time, the effects of the drug will begin to wear off.
Symptoms begin to wear off early for most. But, that doesn’t mean the drug is free from the body. The liver takes a lot longer to metabolize and flush out the drugs. For most people, opiates are completely out of the system within 24 hours.
But does that mean nothing will show up on the tests?
What Do Tests Pick Up?
There is more than one type of drug testing available to employers. Here are all the ways you can test employees, and how effective they are.
1. Urine Drug Testing
The drugs may be out of the system, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be traces still left. With urine testing, most opiates are detectable within four days of taking it. Again, every person is going to be different so the timeline could be a little shorter.
2. Blood Testing
Blood testing has a high rate of success if testing is done within the first day. But, after some time, drugs can’t be detected in the bloodstream.
3. Saliva Drug Testing
Saliva testing for opiates is fast and easier than urine or blood tests. The only problem with it is that it won’t detect drugs as far out as urine tests. But, it’s still capable of finding drugs within 24-48 hours if done right.
4. Hair Follicle Tests
Hair follicle testing is likely one of the most reliable and test types. The reason is that it can detect substances several days later.
A week or more to be exact. It’s not as expensive as blood tests, either. Though, it’s pricier than the saliva or urine testing.
